Who AJ Campbell is
AJ is the name his friends use. In business he is Adrian Campbell, founder and CEO of the Kinnara property marketplace, and both names belong to the same man.
He is a father and a sports fan, and still a country boy at heart, raised in Shepparton in northern Victoria. This page is about life outside the office. His working life is set out in the full profile.
Motorbikes and fishing, from the Goulburn to Lombok
Campbell learned to ride on dirt tracks around Shepparton and to fish on the Goulburn River. Neither habit faded. Whenever work leaves room, he is back on a bike or out with a rod.
These days he is just as likely to be riding or fishing near Lombok's coast as back on a Victorian river. Kinnara Capital's land is at Buwun Mas in Sekotong, on the south-west peninsula of the island. The bays there are calm, and small islands sit just offshore. Fishing is part of daily life in the coastal villages, where small wooden outrigger boats work the bays.
In Indonesia, motorbikes are how most people get around, so a rider fits straight in. Lombok's roads run from coastal routes around the bays to steep climbs inland towards Mount Rinjani, the country's second-highest volcano, which rises to more than 3,700 metres.
His Shepparton childhood is where the riding and fishing began, and the Sekotong and Buwun Mas page describes that stretch of coast.
Following Essendon from Asia
Campbell has backed Essendon for as long as he has followed football. The Bombers, based in Melbourne, are one of the oldest clubs in the AFL. Home games are played mainly at the MCG and at Marvel Stadium.
Following them from Asia means watching on a screen, often at odd hours depending on where he is that week. He has kept the habit going through his years abroad.
Cars AJ Campbell has owned
His interest in machines began with those childhood motorbikes and grew from there. At different times his garage has held Ferraris, Bentleys, McLarens and a run of Porsches.
A McLaren 570S appears among his photos. McLaren, based in Woking, England, launched the 570S in 2015 as part of its Sports Series. Its name comes from its 570 metric horsepower, produced by a twin-turbocharged V8 mounted behind the cabin, and it opens with upward-swinging dihedral doors. Pictures of the cars and more are on the photos page.
On the water with friends and family
Time on yachts with friends and family is another favourite, whether for fishing or just for cruising. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago, with more than 17,000 islands, so boats are part of everyday life.
Lombok's south-west coast suits that kind of day. Gili Kedis, Gili Sudak and Gili Nanggu, three small islands off Sekotong, are a short boat ride from the shore. Their clear water draws snorkellers as well as anglers. A note covers the southern Gili islands of Nanggu, Sudak and Kedis.
Travel, film and food after 15 years in Asia
About 15 years of his life have been spent in Asia, and he is well travelled. He speaks Indonesian, picked up while running a resort in Bali in his early twenties, and uses it at work to talk directly with developers, landowners, officials and village leaders.
Indonesian is the national language, used alongside hundreds of regional languages. On Lombok, many villagers also speak Sasak.
Away from work he enjoys film, good food and seeing places he has not been to before. Lombok is an easy place to like for food: local dishes such as ayam taliwang and plecing kangkung are known for their chilli heat.
Writing a novel about property selling
Campbell's novel in progress follows the business of selling property. He knows that trade from the inside. He is Managing Director of the agency Prestige Pinnacle Realty, and he founded Kinnara, where upwards of 15,000 agents post listings.
No title or publication date has been announced.
Community time on Lombok
On Lombok, his work also takes in the villages around Kinnara Capital's land. The community days and school donations are set out on the giving back page.
